Singer KK death: Police reveals deceased singer had gastric problems, consumed antacids after feeling unwell during his live performance in Kolkata

Singer-composer KK passed away on Tuesday night due to a heart attack, at the age of 53, following a live performance in Kolkata. While performing at the Nazrul Mancha auditorium in the city, he fell ill and returned to his hotel where his condition deteriorated and he passed away.

According to a doctor who conducted KK’s autopsy, the singer was on antacids “probably considering some pain which he mistook as digestive problems”, PTI reported. Additionally, a senior officer of Kolkata Police revealed that his wife admitted that he took a lot of antacids. “He had told his wife during a telephonic conversation of experiencing pain in his arm and shoulders,” the IPS officer said.

According to the singer’s autopsy, he had 80 percent blockage in the left main coronary artery and small blockages in various other arteries and sub-arteries. Apart from that, the singer was said to be suffering from chronic kidney and liver.

Officials also claim that too much excitement during the live performance stopped the blood flow of the singer leading to cardiac arrest. Traces of antacids were found in his body, and antacid strips found in his hotel room, according to the police.

KK is perhaps not the only one to have mistaken heart issues with acidity. Any unwarranted symptoms of acidity or episodic anxiety and restlessness should also be brought to the attention of a specialized doctor so that a significant heart related crisis can be avoided.

Reasons for Cardiac Arrest

Cardiac arrest is a condition in which the human heart stops beating suddenly. It is an emergency situation with fatal outcomes if not detected and treated immediately. It occurs due to an electrical malfunction in the heart leading to extremely high heart rates, which prevents blood from pumping to any organ in the body, thereby cutting off the oxygen supply. Those with pre-existing lungs and kidney conditions are more prone to cardiac arrests.

How Long Does It Take For Symptoms of Cardiac Arrest To Manifest?

KK had performed live for three hours in a crowded auditorium before returning to the hotel and complaining of heaviness in chest. The gap between the first symptom of cardiac arrest and the time by which it becomes fatal can be as short as seconds and sometimes as long as four weeks.

If a person has a cardiac arrest, survival is only possible if they receive fast, appropriate medical care. When the heart stops functioning the lack of oxygen in the body can easily result in death or brain damage within minutes. So, staying alert and getting medical help is essential.

What To Do If Your Heart Is Feeling Heavy ?

The first thing people should do if they feel heaviness in their heart is take a rest. As you rest, take a dispersible aspirin dissolved in half a glass of water because it works as a blood thinner. After this, the person should immediately rush to the nearest heart hospital, for an ECG and some cardiac enzymes tests, to confirm the diagnosis.

What To Do During A Cardiac Arrest ?

If not resuscitated on time the person with cardiac arrest loses consciousness within 3-4 minutes. Therefore, the moment you witness somebody collapsing, immediately call for help, assess whether there are signs of heart activity by checking the pulse, and signs of breathing. If these signs are absent, start CPR ( Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) Immediately.

Start chest compressions at a rate of 100 times in a minute, said the doctor. The underlying cardiac rhythm in cardiac arrest is usually ventricular fibrillation for that you have to defibrillate the heart which can be done using the Automated External Defibrillator. If you do not have AED nearby, continue CPR till medical help arrives. With rising cases of sudden cardiac arrests, people should have AEDs available in their workplaces and residential societies
